Y2K: Aus' Qantas boss will not board a plane on New Year's Eve
Updated Thu Apr 8, 1999 11:20 GMT
By The Associated Press Adelaide--Apr 8--The boss of Qantas airlines today said neither he nor otherkey Qantas executives will be on board one of his company's planes on New Year'sEve to test the millennium bug theory. * * * James Strong, Qantas chief executive officer, said he was certain Qantas hadno Y2K compliance concerns, but he could not vouch for international airportsand air traffic controllers. "I will be at our headquarters stone cold sober watching what happens andready to take quick actions," on New Year's, Strong told a national meeting ofaccountants. "The last place I'd want a key executive to be is in the air. Ithink that would be the same with most businesses. We will have all our keypeople there making decisions." He said he did not expect much disruption to the normal flight schedule butQantas would cancel flights if there were any doubts about safety. In the US, FAA Administrator Jane Garvey plans to fly coast-to-coast on NewYear's Eve to demonstrate confidence in the agency's computer handiwork. She hassaid there may be some disruptions because of delayed baggage but the agency isworking to keep them to a minimum. The Y2K problem is an outgrowth of an old computer programming technique inwhich years were labeled for record-keeping purposes only by their final twodigits, such as "99" for 1999. There is concern that computers will malfunctionwhen the date changes to 2000, which some computers might interpret as 1900.
