also in AFCI, looks like they have a new CEO, and good possibilities for an SBC contract soon...

Excerpt from 4/2 article...

The first step could come later this month. A regional Bell operating company -- reportedly SBC Communications, the nation's second-largest phone company -- is expected to place Advanced Fibre on its list of approved suppliers for digital loop carrier systems, a device that connects homes and businesses to the central telephone network.

Wall Street analysts estimate the contract could be worth $25 million to $40 million a year for Advanced Fibre, depending on its success in selling its equipment.

Schofield, 50, is a well-regarded international businessman with experience in selling telecommunications equipment around the world.

"I think he's the man for the job,'' said Reg King, an analyst at Hambrecht & Quist in San Francisco. "He knows the industry, can take the reins from Don and run with it.''

Schofield is president of ADC's Integrated Solutions Group, which provides turnkey telecommunications systems to a wide variety of customers, ranging from giant Baby Bell telephone companies to upstart competitive local exchange carriers.

Under Schofield's leadership, the division grew explosively over the last three years, from $10 million in revenues in 1995 to $200 million last year. The division employed 1,450 workers last December, with operations in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

"He grew it from a non-existing entity to a fairly successful business. He has a track record of executing a business plan,'' said George Notter, an analyst with Dain Rauscher Wessels in Minneapolis. "I think he will be an asset for the company.''
