That is a fair question. My answer would be that I just take them at their word. If they believe Jesus is the one and only way, I view them as a believer. Is that to simplistic? maybe? but that is the criteria I use.
As far as alcholism, most doctors now believe that certain people are geneticlly pre-disposed to addiction. That is to say that their genetic make-up makes it a high certainty that just a little usage of addictive behavior(drinking-drugs, sex, whatever) puts them at high risk to become addicted.
It is similar to people who are genetically pre-disposed to get stricken by certain diseases at some point in their lives.
