You raise an interesting question about Buffett not being up with the times. Berkshires' largest holdings seem to be concentrated around insurance, refined sugar products, and advertising revenues.
The question might be 'are these going to be the most profitable growth sectors of the 21st century?', or will they be internet related technology, software, biotechnology, etc.? In biotech especially, we are on the threshold of a new era, with emerging treatments undreamt of only 10 or 15 years ago. Buffett admits he has no knowledge in these areas, and apparently is not seeking any.
It's also possible BRK may come roaring back in the next few years after the General Re aquisition bears fruit.
Far be it from me to second guess the master, but times do change eventually and we all get older....
