Company Press Release

Compaq Tru64 UNIX Runs on Intel's
Merced Simulator

Reaffirms Compaq's Commitment to Tru64 UNIX

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 1999--Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ - news)
announced today that Tru64 UNIX, the industry's first complete 64-bit UNIX operating system, has
extended its product leadership with a successful port to Intel's Merced processor pre-silicon software
development environment.

Due to the built-in hardware independence of the modern, Tru64 UNIX kernel, Compaq achieved the port
in only four months and a full month ahead of its schedule. Compaq utilized Tru64 UNIX V5.0, the
upcoming major new release of the operating system, which provides enterprise customers with the
most robust, scalable and highest performing UNIX for mission-critical computing.

''Compaq's successful port of Tru64 UNIX V5.0 to the Merced simulator reaffirms our commitment to
offering the best UNIX operating system on Alpha today, and on both Alpha and IA-64 in the future.
Working with the next generation of Tru64 UNIX assures that Compaq will deliver industry-leading
functionality on Merced at its introduction,'' said Tim Yeaton, Vice President and General Manager,
Compaq's UNIX Software Division. ''The addition of IA-64 to our 64-bit portfolio will provide enterprise
customers with a choice of platforms to meet their current and future mission-critical computing needs.''

Tru64 UNIX Market Leadership

Tru64 UNIX, a genuine 64-bit UNIX operating system since its inception, will allow customers to take full
advantage of Merced's capabilities and performance. All Tru64 UNIX key compilers, tools, storage and
clustering technologies are planned for availability on IA-64 beginning with the Merced processor. In
addition, more than 5,600 64-bit UNIX applications currently developed for Tru64 UNIX can easily run
natively at full-performance on Merced. With a simple recompile, these applications available today from
leading ISVs can easily add support for Tru64 UNIX on Merced. No source code changes are required.
This provides customers with the broadest range of choices and compatibility across both platforms.

Investment protection

Tru64 UNIX protects customers' investments with full support for both Alpha and IA-64 architectures in a
single product. With Tru64 UNIX, customers will have the flexibility to choose the platform that best
suits their enterprise computing needs.

''Compaq's modern UNIX kernel technology made the port to Intel's IA-64 architecture relatively straight
forward,'' said Greg Weiss, Research Analyst at D.H. Brown Associates. ''With a suite of more than
5,600 applications already ported to the 64-bit UNIX environment, Compaq is well positioned to deliver
value to customers with the most demanding requirements that are moving to the next generation of
64-bit computing on IA-64.'' Company Background
