Linux surge to be fought

Microsoft: 'Open source' for some Windows code is even on the table.

BY TOM QUINLAN
Mercury News Staff Writer

LOS ANGELES -- Microsoft Corp. President Steve Ballmer said Wednesday that the Redmond-based software giant would take whatever steps necessary to stay competitive with the increasingly popular Linux operating system, and would even consider adopting an ''open source'' model for some of its Windows code.

My favorite from David Cole, vice president of Microsoft's Web Client and Consumer Experience Division:

''Our customers value stability.''

''I think Ballmer's announcement was intended primarily for the eye and ears of people in Washington, D.C., and the more the press writes about Microsoft's sudden interest in open source code, the better they will like it,'' said Richard Doherty, founder of the Seaford, N.Y.-based market research firm Envisioneering Inc.

More lies from Redmond IMHO.
