IBM To Offer Entire Product Line On the Web

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 1999--IBM plans to expand direct sales through the Internet. In May, the computer giant will set up a new Web site, code-named Project Odyssey, to sell its entire line of PC products directly to small businesses and consumers, reports Business Week e.biz. IBM (NYSE: IBM - news) isn't new to online sales. Last year, it sold $3.3 billion worth of high-tech gear online, ranging from disk drives to AS/400 minicomputers. The majority of IBM's electronic-commerce revenue comes from sales of PC products, including computer servers, memory chips, and networking gear. Big Blue lost $992 million in PCs before taxes last year, according to the company's annual report, reports BW.
