most of the world gets its internet thru satellite links...and the technology exists to vastly increase capacity. There is a limit to available orbital slots and frequency allocations, so the folks who own these have monopoly power. There's no barrier to entry for the internet except for the use of the bandwidth provider. I notice all of the telecom companies are rushing to the sat folks looking for a reliable backup in case of a Y2K meltdown.
