EU clears Lucent buy of Ascend April 9, 1999 05:55 AM BRUSSELS, April 9 (Reuters) - The European Commission said on Friday it had cleared the acquisition by Lucent Technologies of fellow U.S. company Ascend Communications. Both firms are active in the sector of telecommunications networking systems but the Commission said in a statement the operation was "essentially of a complementary nature and gives rise to few overlaps." The Commission was notified of the deal on March 1. REUTERS
