SJS - 1) Mr Ferry from Wang? I used to own the pre-reorganised WANG. I think there succession was Dr Wang with Mr Cummingham, Dr Wang without Mr Cummingham, and Mr Miller.
2) Yes, MSFT was eating BNYN lunch regarding NT and VINES, but the battle was fought and won [btw, Mr Allchin was one of the founding members of BNYN, so there might even be bad blood between him and Mahoney.] I might unclear though in my last post, there are actually two separate points a) BNYN is actually doing a respectable job in systems services. Primarily, it is working for its own products, but the latest deal with MSFT is to service the latter's; and b) With the recent problems at MSFT, my guess is that it realises it will not be able to do what it did. Considering NOVL's NDS is making wave right now, MSFT is hedging its bet. In truth, knowing what it did to RealNetworks and Ctxs, I was a bit uneasy when it took a stake in BNYN. But, 1) time has changed; 2) Ferry and Burton have proven themselves to be able managers; and 3) beggars can't be chooser!
3) I wasn't making any implication, but a bottom up approach. If there is any implication at all, the new life for pieces of NOS [not VINES, but LDAP etc] is in the internet space, albeit infrastructure and not contents.
[btw, not sure if the oldtimers are left in this thread, some of them may know I own BNYN for more than 5 years]
