Perhaps Dell doesn't want to build PCs for IBM under IBM's terms. IBM gets a 6% royalty in Europe where it has this arrangement with boxbuilders.

That 6% would give DELL a major competitive advantage by just continuing to do what they do today; and not building PCs for IBM to sell. IBM has already publicly stated that their PC business is dead.

Back in the 70s, the industry looked at DEC with its VAX product line as an IBM killer. That threat never materialized. It looks as if Dell with its Direct model has kicked IBM's butt in the PC sector.
