Peter, my absolute best advice is to string wire. Run category
5 unshielded twisted pair. It's as easy to run as phone cord,
and you can put 100 megabits on it. If you want a little more
best advice, run the cable from each pc location to a point pretty
close to where the phone service comes into your house and
put a hub there. Then you're set for cable, DSL, whatever comes.
However, you can put a hub near either machine and run cable to
the other, or with only two computers you can get a crossover
cable and skip the hub.

Save the RF etc connections for out by the pool <gg>.
