Hello Tai Jin: CTXS and MSFT, NT kernel
if MS open sourced NT - many of the bugs in it would be fixed and the secret APIs would be exposed. And it would take away any advantage that MS has over its competition.
Is an API like a call to a subroutine? The press release indicated MSFT was seriously considering releasing the NT kernel.

I am clueless about the structure of the NT kernel, but if there could be important API's outside of the NT kernel, without further proprietary support from MFTS, couldn't it remain a terribly byzantine task to find and sort out API programs outside the kernel that are intricately involved in making the kernel function. Couldn't a lot of the tweaking functionality of the OS be outside of the kernel?

I am trying to gauge the proprietary importance of the NT kernel. Could it be that releasing the kernel makes it easier to write applications that work with the kernel, but do not necessarily reveal critical programs outside of the kernel necessary for NT to work well? Softheads--please help this molecular head. TIA
Best regards,
m
