Mr. Sam,

<<The SpeedFam Auriga-C is a far superior tool for ILD polishing and for tungsten polishing for the current applications. It has superior throughput, cost of ownership, and manufacturability>>

You must work for SFAM. No where that I am aware of, has the SFAM Auriga-C won an evaluation vs. AMAT's Mirra. Okay, maybe that's not entirely fair, SFAM did win 1 or 2 small orders. However, they don't really stack up against the Mirra. AMAT has won >60% of the recent wave of Korean orders, probably more like 75% of them. The Auriga is not superior for anything if you look at the order rate in the industry right now. Much as I hate AMAT, one can not dispute the fact that they are running away with the market. The wins in the market have much less to do with flexibility than you state. AMAT is winning because of better performance and far better support.

AMAT will have >60% of the WW CMP market by the end of '99. The real question is will it be closer to 70% or 80% for the year. SFAM/IPEC are getting killed right now. Ebara, outside of Japan is not really competitive. SFAM/IPEC have a few strong holds left but they are dwindling.

Relating to copper, SFAM has no tool. Not because of flexibility but because the tool plain doesn't work. IPEC's is the most competitive on copper next to the AMAT and Lam tool.

Don't bet too much on SFAM unless you're hoping for a merger. Which is possible.

Good luck.
