My empathy is boundless. My wallet is not.

In this country, it is often argued that immigrants have not only not been a drain on the economy, but have actually contributed to its growth. After all, the US (like Canada and Australia) IS a nation of immigrants. I can't assess the validity of the argument, but I do know that it is made.

Ir may be a very different story in basically mono-ethnic countries where the immigrants are competing with the "natives" for jobs, and/or where they immediately get all sorts of welfare benefits. In such cases, they are probably a net drain. But hopefully some of these problems could be alleviated, if not eliminated, by certain changes in public policy, which would not entail abolishing immigration altogether.
