philipah - re: NY Times Article

The premise of this article has been the source of some speculation for a few months now.

It might be a tad premature to predict the demise of MSFT in the consumer space, but there does appear to be fundamental threats to the status quo over the horizon, a la, a Sony Playstation / consumer friendly internet "appliance". This sort of threat over the horizon has been seen before, such as when Netscape came out, and Larry Ellison's vision of the Network PC. Don't know how it will work out this time, to be honest. It can be tricky to predict fundamental shifts in the market like this.

As far as how Intel might be collaterally damaged by such a scenario is also pretty speculative at this point, IMHO. It seems pretty clear to me that Intel is not putting all of it's eggs in the MSFT basket already, with several announced initiatives that would ostensibly suggest that INTC is attempting to hedge it's bets. INTC exec's have recently been quoted as saying that they perceive more appliance type products to become more popular. Hopefully, these types of statements by INTC means that they understand they may need to shift direction if the market deems indicates it's prudent to do so.
