*Path to 3G, MAP, Handset Division*

Regarding cdmaOne/MAP:

Yesterday's statement by ERICY [see post 26479] indicates no interest in cdmaOne/MAP. If they are planning to push cdmaOne/MAP they would not want to tip their hand before being ready to move. This would require consolidation of the Q! infrastructure division into their operation and this isn't going to be simple.

Also they won't want to appear to have sold their customers a bill of goods on the virtues of W-CDMA. Most likely, they think they can keep the GSM community believing that the migration path to W-CDMA through EDGE and GPRS is the best path to 3G for GSM carriers [as it might be for political/marketing reasons if not technical]. To convince Ericy that the best path to 3G is through cdmaOne [to either cdma2000 or a harmonized W-CDMA] will require either or both:

The old Q! infrastructure management and engineering gaining credibility within the Ericy corporate structure [no small task]

Evidence of the superiority of the cdmaOne to cdma2000 migration path over the EDGE/GPRS to W-CDMA path. This could be demonstrated in various ways including analysis and demands of the marketplace.

If cdmaOne/MAP takes hold it would mean total triumph for Q! technology. If cdmaOne/MAP doesn't, we will always have FUD.

Regarding the Handset Division:

If Q! does sell the handset operation it might be because:

Management feels that they cannot compete profitably. Results to date, and the recent info from Alex Brown that capacity is being ramped up about 70% belie this. But in future this might be true.

Management feels that they will be better off selling chips to a company like Ericy or Siemens who would expand the operation considerably.

Mighty Q! has some blockbuster new business areas they would like to fund aggressively.

So if the handset division was to be sold, it would presumably be for very sound reasons which would have a similar effect on Q! share price as the infrastructure sale and the 3G agreement.

Just some more thoughts to ponder. But it seems to me handsets are better in-house so that Anita [TM] devices could be built from scratch and in harmony with the Babe [TM] ASICs which Q! also supplies.

I have no information that the handset business is for sale, but since it has been talked about, there are a few ideas I heard on the grapevine. I like the 'blockbuster new concept needing development' suggestion.
