I personally expect OS X (client version) to be delayed at least into next year, possibly even as late as the 2000 WWDC. Why? Because Apple has, in their infinite loop wisdom, been completely silent on seeding the vital portion of OS X, namely the Carbon libraries, to third party developers.
If you'll recall the 1998 WWDC, Apple promised to have a "beta" of Mac OS X (and no, they didn't mean OS X Server) shipping by Q1 1999. From what I've heard, OS X has a quite different user interface to that of OS X Server, and will need a lot of fine-tuning, testing, to get it to run with the ease of use which OS 8.5 users are accustomed to...
I just don't see them being able to do this in 8 months, given the state things currently seem to be at.
Of course, Steve Jobs could spring his usual big surprise at WWDC, and actually ship a beta version complete with Carbon libraries, but I'm not holding my breath. |
