A@P - PAIR fraud easy to replicate + easy to detect

As you know most of the HTML source code can be simply copied from any site along with most of the images. It is surprisingly easy to replicate authentic web sites.

Here's what to look for in potentially fraudulent News releases.

If the hyperlink to the 'authentic News' story begins with a series of numbers - as did the PAIR "News" that was hyperlinked from Yahoo! - raise a RED FLAG. All hyperlinks are a combination of numbers, and modern day browsers use words not numbers so that the web addresses are somewhat intuitive.

To check the authenticity of the site remove the text of the URL except for the series of numbers then hit the [Enter] key. If the link does not take you to the home page of the authentic News source - then you have a fraud. You will most likely be taken to the home page of an ISP. This is the simplest case.

However, there is nothing to stop someone registering a domain name and then replicating the home page of the authentic News provider - nor its related web pages.

As a safeguard, I would also contact the authentic News provider to authenticate the News - in cases where the News URL started with a series of numbers.

This is a quick check for any News story that has a hyperlink beginning in numbers and can be checked in 10 seconds + phone call.

Unfortunately, this may be a one off scam as it's so easy to do. I suspect that we will see an increasing level of sophistication in these types of frauds which will make them harder to detect.

David.
