It's difficult for a company as old and large as BBN to clear out the deadwood and react nimbly to the marketplace. It's difficult to attract the best managerial talent because there are plenty of little startups in Cambridge happy to offer equity and a real chance to hit the sweet spot. It doesn't surprise me that you found the backoffice types less than stellar. The chance that a great technical idea will get picked up and pushed by an intrapreneur at BBN is close to nil -- too many territories, egos, and quasi-governmental attitude (which may fit well with ATT, come to think of it). The rudeness does surprise, though.
