I'm very interested in downloadable music myself and can't wait to load down albums on to my portable player, but let's face the truth of where we stand with this. MP3 and related formats is being heavily debated in courts and in the public arena. Look how complicated it was for DVD to be released to the public.
How long was that held up for ?
MP3 is going to become a reality IMHO, but it's not going to be here for us, the mass market, in the "very, very short term". We first have to get everyone access to this medium, which will take time and money to build. Remember, less than a 3rd of the U.S. population owns a PC. For MP3 and related formats to be as successful as CDs, we have to come up with a more efficient way of delivering the music to the masses. The PC or cable modem is not going to cut it right now to reach the amount of consumers CD's and DVDs do. CD, and DVD sales should be just as strong as ever for the next 3 - 4 years IMO. Who knows what VMIX, CDNW, and AMZN will adapt to, or come up with to feed us the tunes we love so much ?
