APR 9, 1999, M2 Communications - Fremont, Calif -- Infosys Technologies Ltd. (Nasdaq National Market: INFY), a leading software consulting firm, today announced that it has been selected by Dell Computer Japan (Dell Japan) to provide custom development for the company's online commerce applications. This announcement is in line with the company's aggressive E-Commerce strategy - which calls for Dell and its subsidiaries to be able to conduct 50% of all business online by the year 2000.

To expand its operations overseas, Dell Computer, the world's third largest manufacturer of computer systems, divided the world market into four regions: US, Europe, Japan and Asia-Pacific. Dell Computer Japan, a subsidiary, was established in 1993 - and adopted the sales model of the parent company. Dell Japan has grown rapidly and is the second largest of the Dell subsidiaries behind the United Kingdom.

Like its US and European counterparts, Dell Japan is a pioneer in PC direct sales manu-facturing. Since its inception, Dell Japan has employed "order manufacturing" which involves manufacturing custom made PCs to meet user specifications. With its Malaysian factory enforcing "low inventory operations" to minimise maintaining huge parts inventories, Dell Japan has achieved new records. And, by first identifying the Internet as its mail order channel and then embracing an online "build to order" capability, Dell Japan has reduced its costs while enhancing its customer relationships.

* An innovative business model

George Mora is the Online Services Manager reporting to the IS Director. He is responsible for all online operations for the company including supporting internal and external customers, managing the data centre, directing application development and coordinating with other departments that have online initiatives. His group also provides technical support. The Dell Computer business model has always involved a direct relationship with its customers. With the surge of the Internet, conducting business online was a natural extension of that direct sales system. Dell Japan's Online Services emerged to address that specific requirement. Currently, Dell Japan's site is the largest E-Commerce site in Japan.

In April 1998, Dell Japan issued an RFP. The company had identified a number of development projects that it required to enhance its online E-Commerce orientation. These projects embraced both existing enterprise systems as well as expanding its online capability. The strategy was to make the Internet an essential part of its corporate ecosystem, for communications as well as commerce.

Twelve companies responded to the RFP and Mora's team began its evaluation process. Key to the selection was to secure the services of a partner that met the following criteria:

1) Inter-national enterprise experience,

2) Internet expertise,

3) A rapid development cycle and

4) Flex-ability. "We are a build-to-order manufacturer," stated Mora. "It is important that, as we grow, our vendors understand our business model and have the expertise and nimbleness to respond to our changing needs," he concluded.

* Building online functionality

Mora's team selected Infosys Technologies (Fremont, California) for an initial project involving development of a database to support local pricing and configuration operations. When that project was successfully completed, Infosys began a second project to add functionality to Dell Japan's online store, which had been running since March, 1997.

Infosys' custom software development solutions are designed to cost effectively meet the needs of companies supporting enterprise-wide software solutions. "We are pleased to provide Dell Japan with a staff that can effectively manage its application development requirements within compressed timeframes," stated Phaneesh Murthy, Vice President of Worldwide Operations for Infosys. "We are excited about the opportunity to assist Dell Japan as it evolves its E-Commerce applications - and to do so at a competitive price," Murthy remarked.

Mora is pleased with the results of Dell Japan's initial projects. "We can always count on a well-rounded discussion and good solid solutions," observed Mora. "The Infosys staff is very knowledgeable, has industry experience and online expertise. It seemed obvious from the first meeting that the right elements were there, " he concluded.
