Ref. Rights -IPO's and Option Calls

From you Gentlemen who appear to have followed SFE for quite some time, I would be interested, in getting your opinion as to the impact of a rights or IPO announcement on the value and usefulness of SFE calls (let's assume deep in the money)

1) First, for shares, which date is retained as the date establishing the number of shares held for the purpose of issuing rights (date of announcement? date of IPO?, etc.)
2) Then, what happens to the value of calls and when (although I assume that if stock goes down, as it may, value of calls will go down and there is no direct manner in which to participate to the benefits of the rights/IPO - would this be correct?)

Thanks for comments
