BARRONS today on CPQ and DELL

"That said, technology stocks could come under some pressure Monday because Compaq Computer announced after the close of trading Friday that its first-quarter profits would be substantially below Wall Street's already reduced estimates. The problem? Reduced business demand from businesses and fierce price competition. Compaq put its first-quarter profits at 15 cents a share, half the 31 cents expected by analysts surveyed by First Call. Compaq rose 1 5/16 Friday to 30 15/16 ahead of the news. Look for a decline in Compaq on Monday.

Dell could face rough going, too. Stock sales by Chairman Michael Dell and other insiders have intensified in the past few months. Wall Street tends to downplay these sales, but maybe Dell and his top lieutenants know something.

However disappointing the Compaq news was, it amounted to a rarity in last week's profit parade.
