I think the problem was Madeleine wanted "it" and Billy couldn't shape up. So he created a diversion to amuse her.
Seriously, I can't fathom what the war is REALLY about. Sure, every day I see the propaganda about ethnic cleansing and genocide etc but that's only the EXCUSE not the REASON. In fact, nowhere else in the world has ethnic cleansing or genocide prompted anyone to get too excited about doing anything --- Basques, Kurds, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, East Timor, Tibet, Cambodia, Chechnia, Afganistan. Suddenly there's moral outrage. Richard Holbrooke didn't want military intervention. Madeleine did. She got it.
And now? It can't be stopped.
