Why is electronic commerce an issue for trade promotion policy

Electronic commerce is a key trade promotion policy issue because of its potential to transform the way a large segment of world trade is conducted. Electronic commerce is still in its infancy, but it is already the fastest growing type of international, value added trade. Estimates of the potential global value of Internet transactions by 2000 vary widely, but most lie in the range of US$100 billion to US$150 billion per year compared with around US$3 billion per year currently.
