Let's just ease into this...and the first question of course has to be--why should I do any of my own research? Well, the short answer is that the mutual fund managers mostly suck. In a later post I'll be happy to defend that--but for now, I will say that fund managers generally stay in the big biotech stocks (Amgen) because the have to stay liquid. But you and I can take more of an investment-oriented approach, learn about the stocks we want to own, and hold them til they pay. Plus--when an individual investor changes his mind, he can easily extricate himself from the position, that is our advantage, being nimble enough to turn on a dime.
It still isn't easy picking the right stocks...for instance, OSI pharma, OSIP had a nice run lately, doubling in a short period of time--and I really did not catch it (but I probably should have).
Anyway, let's take a look at some of the cancer related biotech stocks which have been promoted to the public. Here is an interesting url; moneycentral.msn.com Seven top biotech picks for 1999
Let's pull out the stocks he has picked because of developments in cancer therapy, pull them apart, decide if they look good, and if not, find something even better.
So, the next post will deal with Isis pharma--ISIP, one of Jubak's picks--this might indeed be a fine pick long term...but I think we can find a few others that look better than this...
