I don't know anything about NT internals, but I think that MSFT has an unfair advantage over competition since they control the platform (NT) and use its secret APIs (interface to routines) in their application software. The result is that their software performs better than the competition. Or more insidious, they might deliberately cripple or reduce the performance of competing software.

Once the kernel is open everyone will have access to those same APIs. But there's also the question of just what is included in the kernel. It could be just the core of the operating system, whereas the interesting features may be implemented in various DLLs. So will MSFT open up the entire operating system? I don't think so.
