Hi Henry,
One thing that burns me about this whole Yugoslavia mess is that Clinton's soul mates back here stateside were spitting on combat veterans during the Vietnam era.
So it appears to me that much of the fighting-aged populace took the college deferment, while the poorest were sent to fight. So it seems to me you had poor people of all persuasions, fighting and dying while their cowardly richer, college-deferred "brothers" were back at home theorizing on the horrors of war and the terrible nature of those who would fight it.
What a pathetic scene indeed.
Today these same college theorists of yesterday are guiding us into a war we neither want nor need. This looks like it will eventually result in a war with Russia.
Has anyone confirmed if there is a giant mineral deposit under Kosovo, and that if you take it away from Yugoslavia, the government in Belgrade will collapse, or is this just Serbian propaganda?
There was a general on Nightline last night, saying he could put together 150,000 men, composed of 2 German, 2 American divisions, the French Foreign Legion, and a British Heavy Division. I think he also wanted to include an American Heavy division. Isn't our best armored division - or at least one of its brigades - located on peacekeeping duty there today?
I'm not sure what value heavy divisions will have in such a mountain campaign, but the general was confident he could put the force together in 2 months, and that he could campaign in less than 2 months. He said that the Serbians would really be feeling the hurt once his campaign began.
If the minerals are really there, it looks like NATO wants control, and the Russians appear to want to block that control. What happens if someone lets off a nuke in the upper atmosphere and plunges that part of the world into darkness with an EMP?
So tell me, if NATO goes for a ground war, will Russia back down or is this going to be that European war we've dreaded for nearly 55 years now? Maybe Patton was right and we should have continued on into Moscow in 1945, and made Europe into part of the United States.
Whatever the case I can't be convinced that this little war is any business of the U.S. Men have raped and pillaged forever. I think it makes the men of the so-called "civilized" countries a bit squeamish to look in the mirror every morning and know that they're not so different than the plunderers of Yugoslavia. We like to think we're better but deep down inside we know there is a beast which lurks within. To the victors go the spoils of war, but the PC western press cannot face this simple, age-old fact.
They paint the perpetrators of these atrocities as inhuman, and fail to reveal the grand motives of NATO - which are in the end just as plunderous (is that a word?) as those of the original alleged perpetrators.
Now tell me, is there a huge mineral deposit there? Does the EU want to build a pipeline through there? If the answer to either of these questions is "yes" then I'll stand by my assertion that NATO is a bunch of scoundrels. If the answer is "nay" to both I will withhold judgement on them. (as if that matters )
FWIW Andy
