I posted the following on the TRK thread but figured it was relevant for this thread also. It's from a newsletter I received, dated Feb 20.

* Bruton Smith, CEO of Speedway Motorsports Inc., did not deny this week
that he might be interested in buying or taking control of Las Vegas Motor
Speedway, which has lost its racing management team. Word yesterday,
however, was that NASCAR's International Speedway Corporation may be looking
at owning or managing the property.
That would be an important step for ISC chief Bill France. Smith has run
circles around ISC in the past couple of years, buying and building tracks in
major markets, leading some to believe Smith (he denies this) would start a
rival series.
France was noncommittal, saying only that NASCAR would send some of its
officials to Las Vegas to help run and promote the Busch race there next
month. As for anything else, he told the Richmond Times-Disapatch: ''From the
Speedway Corporation's standpoint, our long-range position plans, we don't
discuss that. We don't confirm or deny or anything on rumors.''
