Eric: I'm new to this 56kbps race... Is ROK going to build the modems or only produce a chipset like Lucent? When LU sold Paradyne, I believe the modem business went with Paradyne. On the time line for LU to have chipset ready,... I've located this in a Compaq/Lucent announcement...

compaq.com

"Jan 8th, 1997....

56K Upgradeable Modem: Select new Presario PCs will include the 56K upgradeable Modem(7), the fastest modem supported over standard phone lines. It uses the K56flex protocol that is jointly developed with Lucent Technologies and Rockwell Semiconductor Systems.....

7. Presario 4784, 8760, and 8772 models include modem hardware. Software upgrade (planned availability 2Q97) is required."

Also..

hayes.com

"Hayes will offer 56K upgrades to any North American client modem beginning in the first quarter of 1997."

"Hayes will upgrade any modem at any speed from any manufacturer to 56K for only $99! Users who purchase new HayesACCURA 336 and OPTIMA 336 products will receive a free upgrade. Visit our 56K Upgrade page for complete details."

"To address consumer demand for higher speed Internet access over standard analog telephone lines and telecommuters need to remotely access corporate LANs, Hayes will offer 56 kbps technology in its modems and server products beginning in Q1 1997."

My take is the chipset will be ready before the end of 1Q97 and the software will be ready before the end of 2Q97.... until later...
