" Microsoft was considering making its computer source code more freely available..."

A somewhat different perspective is given by Ed Muth. The headlines for this ZD-Net article say

Microsoft to open source? Not likely
Despite company comments, it's not likely to cede control
of Windows 2000.

There is also an article about MS demonstrating a 64-bit version of Windows 2000. With a remarkable demonstration on an 4-way Alpha that showed, indeed its faster. An amusing quirk is that MS is considering releasing an interim 36-bit version.

Then we have "Microsoft pushes hard with Win 2000"

With a variety of cool tidbits, like applications that worked in Beta 2, no longer work in Beta 3.
