I'm not sure I agree. What if some superior race of aliens encountered him, assumed we had sent him as an ambassador, and judged the rest of us by him. They might very reasonably conclude that extermination was the only sensible option.

The probability of this is quite minute, I grant, but it is enough to give pause.
