AHP can't afford to take the risk of fighting the cases. That would put too much at the fate of juries that could be swayed by emotional witnesses and victims. If AHP loses just one of those cases, their liability would be potentially unlimited, and would provide precedent for future litigants. Even if AHP truly believes they have a solid defense, as is always stated in the annual reports, the risk is too great that they will lose these lawsuits. Sure, $500,000 seems excessive, but what if they had been ordered to pay out the $110 million originally sought? That would have paid for a lot of out-of-court settlements.

AHP decision to settle wasn't a rash one; they clearly weighed their options and decided to limit their liability. I expect them to continue to do the same.
