Synchro - Judging from USA Today's description of the various uses of pulse radio, it sounds like it is perfect for ultra-low power, miniature wireless cellular phones

This technology is indeed ideal for some things, but cell phones is probably not one of them. See:

Also note that there are other problems with ultra-wideband like the fact that the frequencies near 2GHz will be much more attentuated then the ones near 100 MHx (for example) and this requires compensation, especially at distances of 20 miles (?) or more.
