Viagra Seen Available In Singapore From April 19 -Newspaper

SINGAPORE (AP)--The anti-impotence drug Viagra will be available by prescription in Singapore starting April 19, a newspaper reported Sunday.

Eager patients have already reserved prescriptions for the U.S.-made drug with their doctors, The Straits Times newspaper said.

Men from other Asian countries were also reportedly waiting to buy the pills through doctors in Singapore, whose modern facilities attract well-to-do patients from less-developed countries in the region.

Singapore would be "competing for supply with countries like Taiwan and Malaysia," Michael Khor, the Singapore marketing director for Viagra manufacturer Pfizer (PFE), reportedly told the newspaper.

But he added that the first shipment of the drug to Singapore would likely meet current needs.

Pfizer earlier agreed to comply with Health Ministry conditions for the sale of the drug in the tightly-regulated island republic.

Viagra sold in Singapore must come with an extra warning pamphlet for patients, in addition to the standard pamphlet meant for doctors.

Doctors are also restricted to prescribing a maximum of 12 pills per month to each patient.

The blockbuster drug, which had sales of about $788 million last year, has been linked to several deaths in the United States.

Men who take some heart medications, and those with certain eye conditions, are often warned of possible complications arising from Viagra use.
