I think that depends on what you were expecting. When cpq made the digital and Tandem acquiisions, it was already clear that the Dell model was changing the industry, and Dell was achieving their success with mfg automation and almost no engineering expenditures. Cpq ignored these trends and acquired 2 floundering high end companies with heavy engineering budgets, that each offered service and support - fine - but the market was telling them service and support didn't matter. The tandem and dec acquisitions would be like Barnes and Noble going out now and buying up Crown (assuming Crown still had a brand). It doesn't make any sense to acquire mature companies past their prime unless you want to make a Unisys or there is something specific you are after I think.
