I believe that there was also extenuating language in the New Testament, something about the Law ( and thus perhaps the excesses of the Old Testament) being completely revised.

My big bull moose gripe with the New Testament is its failure to relinquish the single ugliest facet of Judaism - its claim to being the one good way to righteousness (or even more strongly phrased - salvation). I have lost all respect for a God-concept that revolves around exclusivity. This merely breeds a class of moral judges. Wrong ones.
