The point I am trying to make (so far with a lot of difficulty!) is that the old testament purports to be the word of God. Not once or twice, but repeatedly. Those "words" form the basis of the Pentateuch, and so far as I know are considered to be authentic by Christian believers. But if you measure those words against actions you get a different picture. Consider the flood as an example. Thou shalt not kill? Hardly. Adultery? Any number of stories here. Covet your neighbor's goods? The whole story of the fight with Canaanites is nothing more than a justification for a military land grab. I could go on and on.

Some Christians contend that the New Testament replaces the Old in issues of morality (I guess God changed his mind about a lot of things in the intervening years). That's a convenient way for getting around the myriad commandments given the Israelites in the Pentateuch which include such items as the use of doves to free homes of mildew, or how to decide whether a wen or canker was tumerous.

Many other Christians use the OT as justification for homophobia, loathing of masturbation, rejection of evolution, justification for killing certain people, etc. Sidney's claim was that religion provided the basis for morality because it was absolute. I contend just the opposite. Religion is simply a convenient way to phrase our current view of morality, and it is as plastic and fluid as any other view. It just pretends to be static because it makes pronouncements in absolutes -- absolute which are rapidly modified by the next generation.
