Emile,

A very good point. Most historians have greatly
underestimated the importance of the Byzantine
Empire. It was actually the second half of the
Roman Empire. In fact, they even practiced the
Roman Law and Government up until the 1400's when
the Ottoman Empire destroyed the remainders of the
empire. People may think of it as just a period
of Kaos. The British historian William Lecky said
of the Byzantine Empire "They are mostly concerned
with mysticism, monks, eunics and women, eye gouging,
and endless fratricide". Sounds like things have
not changed all that much throughout the Balkans.
The Byzantine Empire also gave Western Russia its
religon and alphabet, based upon the Greek alphbet.
The ties that bind the Balkans to Russia are strong.
Clinton is mindless if he thinks that he can just
run roughshod over the will of the Russians. In
fact, Boris Yeltsin has already stated that an
invasion of Kosovo would lead to war with Russia.
I hope everyone is ready for WWIII.
