Aol et al. want to bypass @home completely and just pay rent on the wires to the cable companies.

My understanding of this situation is perhaps too simplistic. I thought any ATHM subscriber can sign-up for AOL's content for an additional $ 9.95 per month, and would be just one click away, after logging on through ATHM's start-up page. I think the battle is over that all-important "first page" the customer sees each day. The individual customer's Portal to the world's internet content. AOL wants to be able to bypass ATHM's start-up page and be the one who directs the customer to content/e-commerce sites/etc. Without being the start-up page, AOL is just another Yahoo! or Excite, yet AOL would charge customers for the right to view their content, unlike Yahoo!
