<<dell does not compete in the same market as e-machines...they are a retail product...>>

Small businesses and consumers are gravitating to Celeron-based systems, while the PII (and mid-range PCs by extension), according to Dell, is dying. Dell has already stated that it must compete in the Celeron category and sub-$1,000 category "in force." Small businesses and consumers tend to purchase through retail outlets, where there are no wait times and Office Depot delivers.

Make no mistake. Dell will be competing with EMachines for the same customers. The new EMachine 400 MHz model is slated for shipment about the 20th according to Best Buy. May have in stores about 10 days later. Meanwhile, they can't keep them on the shelves (even though they are in a back row) and according to the repair center, the repair incidence is quite low.

I'll say it again. Dell will be competing with Emachines and with others such as CPQ which will be selling small businesses and consumers Celeron based CPUs at sub-$600. MD has said that Dell intends to grow market share from current levels to 40% of pc market in seven years. Everett says that they will soon enter the sub-$1,000 consumer/small business market in force. The major growth in pc units has come from sub-$1000 and sub-600 segments. It does not take any particular prescience to see that a collision will be coming.
