I stopped in at Compusa in San Bernardino, CA on Tuesday and asked if they had the 56k modems yet. This was about noon. The salesman said that they had just arrived, were in the back room, and that only the Sportster Externals were available this day. About 10 minutes later, the salesman came over to me and proudly pointed to the display in the middle of the store which had about 50 boxes of 56k's. The model number was 1786 and the price was $219.95.
I have just a little fear in buying one. That is, although my ISP (The Riverside Press Enterprise) is 100% USRX Total Control, my local access line typically only lets me in at a max of 21600. I have seen an article on the web which directs me to harass my local phone company (GTE) to clear the lines of filters, etc.
Anyway, although Compusa seems to be a plethora of computer goodies, I find the sales personnel (at least those that I ran across) to be very unknowledgeable with respect to general computer information. They seemed to be spouting a "fast-food" recipe of information (accurate, but very narrow).
