I think desparation is setting in over at CPQ. Looks like DELL is beating up on CPQ in Europe and America, while IBM is hammering them in Japan.

Compaq to Cut Prices of Computers Sold in
Japan, Nikkei Says

Bloomberg News
April 11, 1999, 4:23 p.m. PT

Tokyo, April 12 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Computer Corp.'s
Japanese unit will cut the prices of computers sold to
Japanese corporate clients by an average of 20 percent to
compete with IBM Japan Ltd., which has also decided to lower
prices,
the Nihon Keizai newspaper said, without citing
sources. Compaq will cut prices for all its desktops, laptops
and PC servers this month. Compaq, which has the world's
largest market share at 14.8 percent, only ranks seventh in
Japan with a 4.3 percent share, according to IDC Japan, a
private research company.

Houston-based Compaq said Friday its first-quarter
earnings will be about half what analysts forecast because of
falling personal computer prices.
