I would rather be in more cash instead unless you think the bull market is over. Puts might be a good idea on a short term basis--right after we had a significant run up in stocks or a certain sector.
After a run up you might actually be better off in selling covered calls---I think that is what a bullish investor would do.

Of course it depends upon whether you are good at finding a "Compaq".
