brad- my guy isn't quite ready to move or I'd be outta here tomorrow. I just ran some numbers on a cost-of-living calculator for austin, dallas, houston vs here...it said that on average there's a 100% increase in salary needed to move to SF bay to get the same cost of living. At my old company the game everybody played was to negotiate a huge salary increase to move here, stay in a rented apartment for six months and then negotiate a lateral to move out again...so people would move from SJ to tx or florida making six figures while their peers that didn't play the game were making 50k for doing the same job. the really shrewd ones found jobs out of the country where they were exempt from taxes up to $70K a year and paying almost nothing for expenses.
