I am not so sure. I think we are still on trial. I think we will be on trial many more years until every ethnic group not only has equal opportunity but believes that it has equal opportunity.
Our greatest advantage as multiethnic natio is that almost every one who has come voluntarily has managed to work their way onto the escalators that lead to success and have left their interethnic and tribal feuds behind. Native Americans were subjected to genocide. Many tribes ectinguished. It was General Philip Sheridan who said "The only good Indians I ever saw were dead! African-Americans (for the most part) had no choice but were kidnapped and enslaved and brought unwillingly to America. Many Hispanics (many with large quanta of Native American blood) have immigrated into a country that extorted the Southwestern and Western States from their mother country.
We have a long way to go until we have an equal opportunity empire.
