FORE Systems Selected to Provide Backbone Solution For Taiwan Internet2 Project
PITTSBURGH, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE - news), a leading global supplier for service providers building the new public network infrastructure, today announced that Taiwan's National Broadband Experimental Network (NBEN) has selected a FORE Systems' backbone solution to build the national network infrastructure that supports advanced Internet broadband applications.

The implementation of this project will assist the NBEN team in its goal of enhancing research programs through the use of important broadband applications such as Video on Demand, data/voice/video integration, distance learning, telemedicine, and video conferencing, as well as introducing emerging technologies such as wireless communications.

The NBEN is an official program under the National Science and Technology Program for Telecommunications, a project promoted by the Taiwan National Science Council. This program emphasizes diversified broadband networking technology such as cable modem, xDSL, Gigabit LAN (local area network), and wireless WAN (wide area network) technologies. In addition, the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)-based network is expected to be regarded as a successful showcase of, as well as a joint-testing environment for, Taiwan's communications inventors.

Professor Zhi-Hong Tsai of National Taiwan University, committee chairman for the bid appraisal of the NBEN, commented, ''We carried out a careful and meticulous assessment of all of the product specifications and solutions proposed by each of the manufacturers. FORE Systems had already completed similar successful cases abroad, and the specifications they proposed fully met our requirements. Furthermore, we have confidence we can interface with any other regional networks since we are using FORE Systems' products.''

''FORE Systems is honored to have been selected as the infrastructure supplier for Taiwan's NBEN,'' said Tommy Nham, marketing director of FORE Systems Asia/Pacific Operations. ''Following the Internet2 program in America, CA*Net II in Canada and SingAREN (Singapore Advanced Research and Education Network) in Singapore, this once again demonstrates the solid reputation FORE Systems' products have in the global Internet community.''

The NBEN project is expected to be completed during the second half of 1999. The first phase of implementation totals 11 GigaPOPs, including Taiwan's major academic centers, research organizations and telecommunications units. The GigaPOPs use FORE Systems' ForeRunner® ASX(TM)-1000 ATM switches connected by STM-1 (155Mbps) broadband circuits from Chunghwa Telecom.
