Pardon me for jumping in, but whats bad about the words shark and sharkess? Many people give sharks a bad rap.

Sharks in general serve a good purpose and are quite efficient animals. I once spent 7 hours on location shooting underwater video of sharks, out of that I got about 40 minutes of usable tape. Sharks are quite interesting animals. I've run into sleeping sharks off of Redondo Canyon, I've swam with blues, makos, hammerhead, and even bull sharks. I'm not sure why so many people are afraid of them.

I didn't read the post to which the 'susan slaine' person was referring to but I would think your blatant objection to hers would cause more people to read and find out what she was referring to.

I don't see what the fuss is about, but I'd say lighten up. Who cares if someone uses the words shark and sharkess? Are you saying if I come on your thread and use either of those words, I too will suffer the fate of doom? If SI removes that post over the use of those two words, then I think over policing might be the word of the day.

And then in your last statement:
Granted SI is a free forum but why you would allow derogatory terms addressed to your most popular posters is beyond me.

I would hope SI doesn't play favorites and would apply the rule fairly across all members of SI. for if they don't, then a standard will have to be made establishing what the word 'popular' means. And it will have to be re-addressed periodically to rank people by definition of popular. If someone loses their popular status, then I guess all prior posts might have to be deleted if deemed to be 'offensive' by the new popular member.
