I can't think of a single reason why either of these companies would give Inprise a passing thought.

Have a look at what happened to Select. Same rumors about one of the heavyweights about to pounce - and save everybody's bacon after the CEO departed - only the outcome was a merger with Base Ten (who?).

If you insist on thinking "merger", think Corel (for the borland.com piece) or Cognos, or Progress, or Compuware etc for the enterprise piece.
